"Subway" is a general term for any 2x6 or 3x6 tile. This tile shape, laid in a brick pattern, has been widely used for well over 100 years to create durable, clean surfaces, White subway tile creates a classic bathroom look, and is a great choice for restoration of arts-and-crafts bungalows and Victorian houses built in the early 20th century. (Click on any photo for a slide show.) White subway tile can be used to provide a background for more dramatic installations, for example exotic granite counters, Scabos Turko travertine flooring, or modern glass mosaics. Laid in a rectangular or vertical pattern, it can look very modern. A row of bullnose subway tile can be used to form a border around other kinds of tile, or as a liner to create visual interest in a field of square tile. The photo gallery above presents several examples where subway tile is used to create classic bathrooms with a modern edge. Subway tile also comes in other colors and materials. The entire Suprema line of hand-glazed tile is available in 3x6 as well as 2x2 and 4x4 sizes. Several Talavera colors come in 3x6, as well as a number of Talavera Decos. Art Glass colors are available in 3x6. We also carry several natural stone materials in 3x6 tiles, including White Carrara Marble and Jerusalem Gold Travertine. |
